$10.7 million for teenager paralyzed in brawl

Published: September 8, 2008

An Illinois jury awarded $10.7 million to the family of a teenager who was paralyzed in a brawl on the family's front lawn.

Kyle Signorelli, 18, at the time, broke his back and was rendered quadriplegic, during a fight with 16-year-old Matthew Kure. Signorelli had graduated from the same high school Kure attended.

Signorelli, now 25, suffered a fractured dislocation of the cervical spine after being slammed into the ground in what witnesses described as a "pile-drive" maneuver, similar to that seen in professional wrestling.

Today, Signorelli lives with complications following several surgeries and more than 20 hospital stays, which includes permanent paralysis from the shoulders down.

Kure was found guilty of aggravated battery and battery and sentenced to a juvenile detention center for 18 months.

Shortly after Kure was sentenced, Kyle Signorelli and his family filed the civil suit against Kure and his parents. Kure's parents settled for $30,000 in 2004, leaving Kure the only defendant in the civil suit.

Although the family is unlikely to collect much of the award, they are considering a motion to garnish Kure's future wages.
